CHAPTER ELEVEN
âYou want me to what now?â I couldnât believe he was even asking.
âCome on, youâre a blood mage. Itâs what you do!â Val insisted.
I put my hands on my hips. âYes, Iâm a blood mage. But a pretty terrible one. And Iâve only used someone elseâs blood the one time!â
Well, that wasnât entirely true. Iâd used someone elseâs blood one other time before that, too. During that accident five years ago. A shudder ran down my spine as I heard the screams in my head once more. Would they ever go away? Did I deserve for them to?
I shook my head to clear it. That line of thought was getting me nowhere.
âSo? You can do it again, then.â Val crossed his arms in front of his chest and looked down on me, like the conversation was now finished.
My temper flared, and I wanted to smack him again, but I fought back the impulse. I still felt like he deserved it the one time I actually did punch him, but this didnât call for it.
âFine,â I said finally. âI suppose I can try. But where are we even going to find Beige Manâs blood?â
Val gestured all about him. âThereâs tons of blood in this apartment. Some of it could be his.â
âI suppose, but which blood?â It was a fair question. âItâs not like I can sniff it out.â
And even if I could, why would I want to do that? Sniff around in dead peopleâs blood? Talk about gross? My stomach squirmed just thinking about it.
Val rubbed his chin. âGood point. I suppose some of the markings on the walls could have been made with his own blood. Maybe we start with those?â
I bit my bottom lip. âWe could, I guess, but Iâll be honest with you. Iâm still pretty tired from earlier, and I donât have a ton of energy to go casting spells. Suppose I pick the wrong blood a few times. What then? Iâll be tapped out is what, and weâll be no closer to our goal. Further, even, because then Iâll really need that nap.â
Val frowned. âI could give you another zap of energy, I suppose.â
I held out my hand toward him. âEw. No.â I did not need him invading my personal bubble right now. Not while I still had so many thoughts running through my head. Some of them about him. âLetâs just try something else, please?â
âWell, there is one other place I can think of that might have Beige Manâs blood, butâ¦â
âBut what?â
Val chuckled. âWell, youâre not going to like it much.â
